Philosophy And Objectives Of The Programme
The philosophy of the programme is to produce graduates who will be well equipped with the specialized knowledge of library and information science in order to make meaningful contribution towards providing good library and information services to the society in general.
The Objectives Of This Programme Include:-
- To train information professionals who will be able to manage all types of libraries, archival institutions, information and documentation centres in multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society such as Nigeria.
- To train information professionals who will appreciate the information challenges of Nigerians as users in an information society.
- To train information professionals who will have the ability to develop the techniques of information storage and retrieval through the application of modern Information and Communication Technologies.
Admissions Requirements
The programme is open to those with:
- University Matriculation Examination (UTME) plus 5 credits including English Language at the Ordinary Level.
- Diploma, Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) National Certificate in Education (NCE) or equivalent qualifications as approved by the university.

Since Department runs both the four-year and the three-year degree programmes, the programme has in its curriculum, courses that run from level I to IV. The course weighting at each level are as follows:
Level I (32 Credits)
Candidates will be required to register for 12 credits in library and Information Sciences, 8 credits in each of the two approved academic subjects and 2 credits of study skills.
Level II (34 Credits)
Candidates will be required to register for 16 credits in Library and Information Sciences, 6 credits in each of the two approved academic subjects and 6 credits of study skills.
Level III (30 Credits)

Candidates will be required to register for 22 credits in Library and Information Sciences, 8 credits in one of the two approved academic subjects taken in levels I and II (which will constitute the candidate’s main subject).
Level IV (32 Credits)
Candidates will be required to register for 20 credits in Library and Information Sciences, 12 credits in the students’ main subject area taken in level III.
